Skin diseases such as ''kushtha'' are systemic disorders and considered a ''maharoga'' (major disease). They require internal cleansing and detoxification treatments prior to external treatments – and hence, the sequence of the chapters. Without prior internal treatment, local treatments have limited efficacy.
