'Tri' means three and 'Guna' means basic qualities. The word 'Triguna' refers to a group of three basic qualities responsible in the evolution of this universe. These include Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. These carry out basic functions of enlightenment, initiation and inhibition of activities.
